Some of you are saying, “Paul, sideburns are dead ever since Luke Perry killed them in the 90’s.” And to you I say no one man is bigger than sideburns, just like no man can take credit for “inventing” them. That’s like saying Tom Selleck “invented” the moustache for his role on Magnum P.I. And contrary to those of you who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when Dylan McKay was king, sideburns have been around much longer than the hit show Beverly Hills, 90210. Somewhere James Worthy’s beard is smiling. Why? Because modern NBA players have stumbled upon a secret he patented years ago while winning titles in the 80’s. Want to successfully advance through the NBA Playoffs? Then grow a beard; the data came back from the lab and the science can’t be disputed.
More players are rocking full beards than any time in recent memory. In the Mavericks vs. Thunder series the Mavs DeShawn Stevenson’s “Neck Forest” is only rivaled by the Thunder’s James Harden who we covered earlier in the week. On the other side of the bracket, the Bulls double trouble bearded combo of Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah are outnumbering LeBron’s “mane” two to one but the series is even. No matter who wins either Conference Final, we’re bound to see some serious beard on beard action in the Finals.
Yesterday, the Oklahoma City Thunder advanced to the Western Conference Finals with a 105-90 victory in game seven over the Memphis Grizzlies. As a key reserve and generally the Thunder’s first player of the bench, James Harden’s beard scored 17 points (most of it via four three pointers he nailed), collected four rebounds, had four steals. And in the process throughout the series, he made it cool to have a beard again. For everything that Brawny paper towels tried to do by replacing the iconic “Brawny Man” and limiting his beard, James Harden’s beard is single handedly reversing the trend.

Now that the full-beard trend is going the way of the goatee, the mustache is getting more face time with trendsetters. So how can you wear one without looking like a cheese ball?
The truth is, not every guy can. But it can be a powerful accessory and it works well with some of the looks we’ve being seeing on the runways, such as at Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren.
Says Dr. Aaron Perlut, chairman of the American Mustache Institute (an advocacy group, think tank and community center — who knew!) and America’s foremost expert on mustaches: “There really is no best style. It’s more about the image you’d like to portray.”
So, broadly speaking, you have choices. If you’re going for an elegant look, opt for the handlebar, as worn so well by mustachioed luminaries like baseball great Rollie Fingers and art-world legend Salvador Dali. This look is high-maintenance with regular waxing required, but if you have the time, it’s worth it. A more macho look can be achieved with the Fu Manchu, as seen on Hulk Hogan or baseball legend Goose Gossage.
More common these days is the Chevron, which stays above the corners of the mouth. “You see this on 97 percent of cops, as well as Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds,” says Perlut. “It’s very popular in blue-collar circles.”
Whatever look you choose, just make sure you have the cajones to pull it off. As Perlut says, “If you’re going to wear a mustache, don’t expect support from those around. It’s about self-confidence. You’ve got to be able to walk down the street and karate-chop someone for no reason and then go eat a panda steak.”

The latest viral video making its way around the web debuts an invention known as the Shaving Helmet. As you can see in the video above, it’s a helmet that shaves your head. Pretty cool, right?
Well, maybe. It’s not entirely clear whether the video is real or not. The test subject doesn’t stay on camera for the entire shave, not to mention the logistical problems like ears and head shape. What do you think – real or fake?
