The Creative Clash Between East And West Coast Clothing

fairway

The battle for style between the East and West coast of the United States goes back as far as the nineteenth century, when a few settlers headed West and broke away from the rigid fashion constraints of the East Coast establishment and developed a fashion style hinting at the pride of rugged individualism.

Are turtlenecks back?

I’ve always been a fan of turtlenecks for the simple reason that they help keep you warm in the winter. But they also look cool as well, and the guys at GQ explain that the look is coming back. It’s a classic look as we all know and it’s also very versatile. You can wear a turtleneck with so many different jacket combinations and it will look great.

Check out this video on how to wear a turtleneck and you’ll probably want to grab some for the winter. We’re not as sold, however, on the slacks that are a little too short for our tastes.

Paul George – NBA Fashion Fail

Paul George fashion fail

We’re huge fans of Paul George. For anyone who is sick of Lebron James and the Miami Heat, Paul George and the Indiana Pacers represent the best hope to stop the Heat from a three-peat. The Pacers are off to a great start and are gunning for the top seed in the East.

We recently saw Paul George when he appeared as a presenter at the 2013 Gatorade High School Player of the Year Awards where Andrew Wiggins was honored. below you can see our interview with him as he discussed the 2013/14 NBA season.

George is a great guy, but as you can see from the photo above he’s in desperate need of some good fashion advice. His haircut is perfect, and the glasses look pretty good on him unlike some of the Urkel glasses worn by some other NBA players. But the rest of his attire is just hilarious. The pink pants and the studded shoes look like they’re part of a practical joke. Some NBA players like Dwyane Wade have come up with worse outfits, but this one is pretty bad. The overall NBA nerd look isn’t that bad and is certainly better than the droopy pants look, but some of the guys take things too far. Here George needs to tone things down a bit.

Are cowboy hats making a comeback?

Popular culture often drives fashion and style trends. Just look at how “Mad Men” has affected styles for clothing and product design as many are inspired by the classic looks of the early 1960s. Another trend to look for has to do with cowboy hats, cowboy boots and the whole country and western look. Again, this is in part being driven by television, with shows like “Justified” and now “Vegas” starring Dennis Quaid driving the new/old look. I remember back in my college days (a long time ago), everyone on our Midwest campus had cowboy boots. I liked them as they made me look taller! It will be interesting to see how popular this look becomes.

Of course, in many part of the country, the cowboy hat and the country look in general has always been and will always be popular. If you’re into this look there are tons of great retailers, both online and off, that cater to this market. You can also find tons of deals out there if you shop around. Stores like Rods.com cater to the classic country and western look, while there are many trendy retailers adopting the look.

In today’s world, the key to any man’s wardrobe is flexibility. If you’re at a slick hotel bar in New York City, you might want to go with the new, slimmer suits that hark back to the Mad Men look. But, as you know, you can also stand out by looking different, and some new cowboy boots or a cowboy hat will certainly grab the attention of the ladies. But these looks are great for every day use in particular. The key is mixing it up and being flexible. Don’t go with one formula. Try different styles and see which one fits you and your lifestyle, or the lifestyle you’re aspiring to have. Look the part!

Brad Pitt channels Don Johnson

Brad Pitt does his best imitation of Don Johnson playing Sonny Crockett from “Miami Vice” as he steps out at the Cannes Film Festival. He has the same slicked-back hairstyle, the all-white suit and even the goatee! Does that mean that all the 80s styles are coming back?
