Classic Drinks: The Old Fashioned
Sunday morning may seem like a strange time to suggest cocktail recipes, but chances are you had your fair share of average drinks last night. Just as every man should know how to tie a tie, how to shoot pool, and of course how to get a good shave, every man should also know how to make a good drink – the more the better. For classy gents, the Old Fashioned is a perfect drink, and Bullz-Eye’s got a perfect recipe:
2 ounces of whiskey (bourbon, rye or Canadian)
1 teaspoon of superfine sugar and 1/2 ounce water, or 1/2 ounce of simple syrup
Angostura or Regan’s orange bitters
Orange wedge and/or maraschino cheery (optional)
Dissolve superfine sugar — regular table sugar or cubes will also work but are harder to dissolve — in water or pour 1/2 ounce of simple syrup (i.e., sugar water) into a wide mouth Old Fashioned glass. If you like, muddle (smash) an orange slice in the bottom of the glass. Add ice cubes, whiskey and bitters — again, we personally prefer Angostura for bourbon or rye or Regan’s orange for Canadian, but it’s your call. Stir vigorously with a swizzle stick or club spoon. Sip away.
Variations: The Old Fashioned engenders as much controversy and variations as the martini. Sometimes, we like to prepare it in a shaker and serve either on the rocks or “up” into a chilled glass. The Brandy Old Fashioned is also an honorable drink, especially beloved in Wisconsin.
Don’t: Use powdered sugar, unless that’s all you’ve got. This is not the same as superfine sugar and contains cornstarch.
Don’t: Use soda water. Some recipes call for it and many bartenders will automatically make it this way. Every time we’ve tried it, it ruins the flavor of the slightly sweetened whiskey.
Do: Add the muddled orange slice and/or maraschino cherry. Many cocktail devotees get fussy over matters like orange pulp on the bottom of the glass. Oddly, this doesn’t bother us.
Man cannot sip on an Old Fashioned alone, which is why Bullz-Eye put together a list of classic drinks with great recipes for each. Head over to the Bullz-Eye Get Real Guide for Men for more recipes.

Bullz-Eye reviews the 2011 Volvo S60 T6
One of our staff recently got behind the wheel of a Volvo S60 T6 for Bullz-Eye.com. His review highlights the way Volvo is operating under new leadership and how the design has changed over the last several models.
Here’s a quick look at what he had to say:
Volvo is known for safety innovation but over the past few years it seems like their interiors are receiving as much attention, if not more. The soft, black leather sport seats in the front and rear were some of the most comfortable seats I have experienced in any car I’ve driven as of late. The dashboard is crisp and precise without clutter and the center console is tilted slightly towards the driver for better views and execution. Our model had a 7-inch color LCD monitor, 8-way power driver seat, a thick and sturdy leather sport steering wheel, dual zone electronic climate control and Bluetooth hands free interface. The interior also has luxury details like its leather trimmed door panels and the high performance Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby Pro. Going into spring in Ohio I was able to enjoy the power moon roof on some decent days.

If you’re looking for a new watch, you might want to take a look at the Bottoms Up watch from Happy Hour Timepieces. Bullz-Eye recently had the chance to review the watch, which gets its name from the built-in bottle opener on the band.
Here’s what Bullz-Eye’s staff member had to say:
Happy Hour Timepieces contacted us regarding their new “Bottoms Up” watch that helps makes happy hour more fun than ever! The new Bottoms Up watch is not your normal wrist watch as this accessory sports a patented bottle opener built seamlessly into the band buckle. That’s correct folks your watch can now double up as a back up bottle opener. (That’s a very cool idea in my book) I tested the opener on a fine Domestic beverage for review purposes only (ha ha) and it worked like a charm.

Bullz-Eye was on hand in Houston this weekend for the Final Four – easily one of the greatest sporting events of the year. Just getting to the event got our guys in the mood for some March Madness. Fans were throwing foam basketballs and sporting their team’s colors everywhere – luggage, clothing, even body paint in some cases.
Here’s a quick peek at what the Bullz-Eye staff saw at the games:
Shortly thereafter, we had settled into our club seats, center court, ready to take in the action. The stadium, like the city, was electric, with fans from all four teams — Butler, VCU, Kentucky and UConn — ready to cheer their boys on to Monday’s title game. Up first was 8-seeded Butler vs. 11-seeded VCU, a meeting of Cinderellas that got the evening off to a great start. In fact, while Kentucky vs. UConn represented what many fans considered the primetime highlight of the evening, the Butler/VCU game was the more enjoyable matchup. Butler G Shelvin Mack and VCU F Jamie Skeen exchanged baskets for much of the evening, with Skeen topping Mack in points, 27-24, but VCU stumbled late and Mack’s Bulldogs ultimately wound up with the advantage on the scoreboard. And that, as we all know, is the only thing that matters.
